Black Hills Photo Shootout ~ The Road Home

 After a wonderful weekend workout

for my legs and my shutter finger and my eyes ~

I was treated to South Dakota skies

painted to perfection.

It was just like

the Black Hills

were saying goodbye

with a flamboyant finale

and a light to guide me to my home

on the

South Dakota prairie.

Black Hills Photo Shootout ~ Boondocks's Vintage Pop Culture Fun

Boondock's

is located south of Deadwood, SD.

It is loaded with vintage

pop culture . . .

Betty Boop and Elvis,

Hollywood memorabilia & collectables . . .

I was a bit partial

to the weathered Betty Boop . . .

gave her a bit of a

vintage, classic

mosaic look.

A classic Ferris Wheel

was fun to shoot.

experiment with techniques

...embossed

...amped up the color a bit

...fully saturating the shadow

...adding brightness and saturation

Just some fun photos to play with...

Vintage Hollywood isn't complete

without a bit of Marilyn ~

~ Monroe ~

I do like this quote

~ embracing identity as a woman

and

enjoying it ~

While these aren't my typical photos,
they gave me good opportunities to experiment
on quiet models that don't complain
about getting another picture taken
and with photo processing software.

Just some fun playing and learning from the Black Hills Photo Shootout.

White Owl Creek in the Fall

It's not necessary to travel too far

for fall scenes

when the little creek bed a few steps from my house

holds treasures like these.

The only signs of a crowd

on

White Owl Creek

are the footsteps of some

white tail deer

that I scare out of their

holes.

Or the laughter of my kids and nieces

floating on the breeze

playing in the yard

Or our beagle

Toby

baying with a sound like he's caught in a trap

which is really his extreme delight

in doing what he was made to do:

hunt rabbits.

Sneak Peek Friday ~ In the Studio ~ This Week's Projects

~A Sneak Peek In The Studio Party~
In between posting from my fun weekend at the
Black Hills Photo Shootout,

this week has been maxxed out with writing for the

These last two weeks have required some outpouring of heart.

In the last lesson, I left it with this challenge ~

Do you believe you are His masterpiece?
Will you allow Him to make you His masterpiece?
To restore, repaint, reshape you into a beautiful new creation?

"And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make." Jeremiah 18:4

~ For we are his masterpiece
created in Christ Jesus for good works
prepared long ago
to be our way of life ~
*Ephesians 2:10

*
Letting Him be the artist of me . . . the potter . . . the author . . .
Letting go . . .

BH Photo Shootout ~ Earliest Photographic History of the Black Hills

When General George A. Custer led an expedition into the Black Hills in 1874,

the very first photos of the Black Hills were taken

by the one photographer WIlliam H. Illingworth.

On Sunday, Dede and I had the unique opportunity

to spend the day with Paul Horsted of Custer, SD.

Paul is best known for his photographs of the Black Hills today

from the same locations as the Illingworth photos.

His photos are featured in the book he and Ernest Grafe put together:

Exploring with Custer:  The 1874 Black Hills Expedition.

I have always been fascinated with maps,

so this was a highlight of the Shootout.

Fascinating how the same rock formations

and dead trees are still in the same place

over 130 years later.

My thoughts turned to my dad

thinking how much he would enjoy this

and also to

my grandfather who passed away in 1988.

Apparently my map fascination

was something that we shared.

My Aunts:  Janet, Linda & Kay

would have enjoyed it too . . .

Our surprise at the top of an outcropping of rocks

that overlooked the location of the expedition's permanent camp

was a carving of "GC" and below that "US 74"

believed to be authentic, carved at the time of the 1874 Expedition.

What a unique opportunity

to take pictures of the same sites

of the very first photographs of

the Black Hills!

Visit
for prints and books from Paul Horsted.

Black Hills Photo Shootout ~ Coke

One of my guilty pleasures:

~

Coke

~

Boondock's

south of Deadwood, SD

was loaded with

Coke indulgences . . .

~

for my

eyes

and camera

~

to be quenched.

~

Even today

~

~

it makes my ears long to hear

the rattle of an old Coke bottle dispenser . . .

{the one in the Ree Heights Store in 1981}

with the skinny door . . . with the cold air on my hands and face

in the summer

&

the explosion of carbonation under pressure

as the bottle top opens

on an old glass Coke bottle.

Thirsty?

Black Hills Photo Shootout ~ Masterpieces in Progress

Today has been a writing day for me.

The closing of my writing fits these photos.

The close was in the theme of masterpiece.

It seems fitting that one of my favorite experiences

of the Black Hills Photo Shootout

was photographing artists in the progress of painting

along the trail of

Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon.

My heart was blessed

seeing artists in motion.

Inspiring.
